Magnesium is one of the few minerals where the shelf itself does most of the confusing. Two products can sit beside each other at a similar price, both saying magnesium in large type, and describe themselves in numbers that appear to have nothing to do with one another. One announces 1,400mg. The next says 200mg, and looks, at a glance, like the smaller offer.

Neither label is wrong. They are measuring different things, and the difference between those two numbers is the single most useful thing a shopper can learn about this particular mineral.

Then there are the names. Bisglycinate. Glycinate. Malate. Citrate. Oxide. Taurate. The internet has strong opinions about all of them, most of it framed as a ranking, and much of it running well ahead of what the evidence actually supports. What follows is the less dramatic version: what a magnesium form is, what the three most common ones in UK supplements actually describe, and how to read a label without needing to take anyone's word for it.

What a "form" of magnesium actually is

Magnesium is a reactive metal. It does not sit stably on its own in a capsule, a tablet or a glass of water. To exist in a supplement at all, it has to be bound to something else — an acid, an amino acid, or another partner molecule that holds it in a stable compound.

That partner is what gives each form its name. Magnesium citrate is magnesium bound to citric acid. Magnesium malate is magnesium bound to malic acid, the compound that gives apples their sharpness. Magnesium bisglycinate is magnesium bound to two molecules of the amino acid glycine.

So when a label says magnesium citrate, it is naming a compound, not a different mineral. The magnesium atom is identical in every case. What changes is the carrier attached to it, and the carrier affects two practical things: how much of the compound's weight is actually magnesium, and how the compound behaves in the gut.

One naming point clears up a common source of confusion. Glycinate and bisglycinate describe the same compound. The "bis" simply indicates two glycine molecules bound to one magnesium atom, which is the standard structure. Brands use both names, and the distinction on a label is one of convention rather than composition.

Chelate is another word that appears often. A chelate is a compound where the mineral is held within an organic molecule — an amino acid, in the case of bisglycinate — rather than paired as a simple salt. Citrate and malate are organic salts. The chemistry is genuinely different, but different is not the same as ranked, and the honest position on comparative human evidence between forms is that it remains limited.

Why a formula might combine several forms

A product listing three magnesium compounds rather than one is described as a complex. This is common enough now that it is worth understanding the logic rather than assuming it is decoration.

Each compound carries a different proportion of magnesium by weight, and each has its own physical characteristics in manufacturing — solubility, powder density, how it behaves when compressed or encapsulated. Formulators combining several forms are working within those constraints while reaching a target amount of magnesium per serving.

The important consequence for a reader is arithmetic rather than biology. Three compounds means three compound weights on the label, and those numbers can be added together in a way that looks impressive without telling you what you want to know.

Compound weight and elemental magnesium

This is the part worth slowing down for.

The compound weight is the total weight of the magnesium plus its carrier. Elemental magnesium is the weight of the magnesium alone. Only the second figure counts towards your intake, and the proportions vary considerably between forms.

As a rough guide, magnesium bisglycinate is around 14% magnesium by weight. Citrate sits in a similar low range. Magnesium oxide, by contrast, is roughly 60% magnesium by weight, which is why an oxide product can print a modest-looking compound number and still declare a large elemental figure.

This is why a 1,400mg label and a 200mg label can describe the same serving. If a formula lists 1,400mg of magnesium compounds in total and declares around 202mg of elemental magnesium, both numbers are accurate. One describes the raw material in the capsule. The other describes the magnesium.

UK labelling rules resolve this in the consumer's favour. Under retained food information regulations, the declared nutrition figure and the percentage NRV must be based on elemental content, not compound weight. If a product's nutrition panel says magnesium 202mg, that 202mg is elemental. Compound weights, where a brand chooses to show them, appear in the ingredients list or in a formulation breakdown alongside it.

Whether the forms are named. A panel that says magnesium, with no compound named anywhere, is withholding information that changes what the product is. Named forms in the ingredients list are the baseline for a transparent label.

Whether compound weights are distinguished from elemental content. A well-constructed label makes the relationship explicit rather than leaving you to work it out.

What UK guidance says about intake

The NHS sets the reference amounts for adults aged 19 to 64 at 300mg a day for men and 270mg a day for women. These are population reference figures rather than personal targets, and the NHS position is that a varied and balanced diet should supply what is needed.

Magnesium is widespread in food. Green leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds, wholegrains, pulses and some fish all contribute, and mineral water can add a modest amount depending on the source.

On supplements specifically, the NHS states that 400mg or less a day of magnesium from supplements is unlikely to cause any harm, and advises against taking too much. That figure is a general safety reference for adults, not a recommendation to reach.

Where the authorised claims sit

In Great Britain, the functions a supplement may describe are fixed by the GB Nutrition and Health Claims Register. A claim can only be used if it appears on the Register, and it must be used in a way that does not alter its meaning.

That is worth holding onto when reading marketing copy, because a great deal of what circulates about magnesium forms — including confident claims about which one is best for what — sits outside what any UK brand is permitted to claim, and outside what the evidence currently supports.
